How to Make a Sidewalk Joy Spot
So you want to make a Sidewalk Joy installation? That’s awesome! Here are some of my recommendations on how to make it happen. If you have any suggestions or follow up questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out. I plan on updating this article as I receive new information, so check back!
1. Figure out any restrictions on these spaces in your area
The first thing I’d recommend is figuring out what, if any, the regulations and/or restrictions are for your area. Some cities have a few reasonable rules to follow for spaces like this. For example, here are the regulations for ‘Small Community Kiosks’ in Portland, OR. While I have heard from folks that their Home Owners Association (HOA) restricts them from having a Sidewalk Joy Spot, I have (so far) not heard about cities or towns as a whole having issues with these installations. If your neighborhood already has many Little Free Libraries with no issues, that’s a good sign!
2. Decide what sort of spot you’d like to make
There are SO many possibilities for Sidewalk Joy spots. For ideas, check out the PDX Sidewalk Joy Map or the Worldwide Sidewalk Joy Map. You could make exchanges like Toy Exchanges, Puzzle Libraries, Plant and Seed Swaps, or Free Little Art Galleries. You could make a Wishing Tree, a Mini Gallery/Diorama, a permanent, often-updated yard decoration, or more!
Consider what your neighborhood already has, what you think your neighbors/community might like and what you’re excited about!
3. Build or repurpose a structure (if needed)
Depending on what type of Sidewalk Joy spot you’d like, you may need a structure. You can build one from scratch (example), purchase a prefab kit (like the ones Little Free Library sells), or repurpose a thrift store find (examples). Stay tuned for another post with tips on weatherizing your spot! You’ll want to consider how you’ll be attaching your installation (see below) before you get started on the structure so you make or pick the right sized structure.
4. Install your Sidewalk Joy spot
There are many ways to install your spot. You can dig a hole, set a post, and install your spot on top of that (example). You can attach your creation to an already existing fence or repurpose an oversized flower pot/small veggie bed garden as a base for a post (examples). Stay tuned for another post with tips for installing a spot as a renter.
5. Let folks know about your installation!
Once your Sidewalk Joy spot is complete, you’ll want to let people know about it. Tell your friends, connect with other spots like this in your area, and of course I’d love to have you join the Worldwide Sidewalk Joy Map!
